First of my Canadian platoons for Disposable heroes rule set.As you can see not based yet but i was waiting for postie to deliver the bren team ,which i hope to paint and base all NEXT weekend.

I used the Battlefront painting guide for all the basic colours and as these need more highlights than the 15mm guides are for i just added light tan to all colours.The steel/metal work is may own mix as i have never been happy with drybrushing silver over black.My mix is vallejo oily steel mixed with vallejo black grey 50/50 the washed with GW devlan mud.

Flames of war Terrain

Friends and i have a scenario planned for next year,its an eastern front game which needed a railway embankment,so with a few days off at christmas i decided to have a go at it earlier than planned.
Before all this i must apologize for photo quality as the "shed of dreams " isn't great for taking pic's and its been raining for two days here,this coupled with the fact that all terrain according to the wife MUST be done in the shed after the "living room carpet/polystyrene cutting incident of 93."

blue foamboard added and details drawn on with a pencil to represent ironwork

I did price up some real model track but its so expensive i brought a bag of Matchsticks and thin balsa and made my own.

undercoated with black

Grey pumice sprinkled between the tracks with PVA

Larger pumice added for ground work

first coat of paint i used Decoart acrylic "cinnamon brown"

Drybrushed with Dulux "Biscuit"

concrete painted with GW Desert yellow and drybrushed with mid grey and then light grey.The roads painted with Americano "asphaltum" and drybrushed grey.

Holes drill for trees.

Soviet green for ironwork and a touch on concrete.

Vallejio weathering powered "rust" and then drybrushed soviet green mixed with grey.

Grass added 3 shades used all from GW

Holes drilled again and bushes fitted.

Grass added to middle of the tracks.

all done.a few old train models and some half painted KV's for eye candy.

Took two days in the shed,helped by Christmas cigars red wine and radio 4xtra.

Pick these up at a show last year and while waiting for terrain to dry decided to do them.

Really clean casting,hardly any clean up and the fit is outstanding for a plastic kit and they have to be as their snap fit!!! but i added a bit of super glue just in case.The only complaint i have,if you can have a complaint at £2.50 a plane:-))))) is the decals No swastika for the tail and No letters only numbers for for the plane id.I used a few left over letters from other models.

Wargaming friend mark Bullock has been boring us with plans .....sorry working on this game for ages,inspired by an article in practical wargamer wargames mag back in 1999 written by Chris Cope.As fate is a strange thing the same Chris Cope i game with and we were lucky enough to have him playing on the day.
Mark worked hard to get the game as historically correct as was possible using our chosen set of ancient rules "Amarti."
Mark,Dave and Chris took the roll of Carthaginians and Andy and i the roll of Romans.Basically its a roman race against time to destroy the Carthaginian center before the out numbered roman flanks cave in.
Early turns saw the carth elephants fighting in an honors even battle with roman skirmishers finally pushing them aside.Then ploughing onto the roman heavy infantry center with small success.Only one elephant survived and hit the heavy infantry in the flank.meanwhile the far right of the roman heavy infantry had flanked the carth center and was posed for a close end as it depended on initiative dice roll and the winner would get first crack at a flank.
Meanwhile the carth flanks commanded by dave and supported by Mark had cleared off the last roman resistance(bravely held by Andy for longer than expected)and heading for the rear of the roman center this was going to be close.
The romans rolled well and took the initiative and got first go finally killing the very stubborn carth center commanded by chris who had resisted for 2 turns.Ending the game.

The Christmas game at the club http://www.newbuckenhamwargamers.net/ was WW2 using 28mm figures and vehicles,which is new to me as a 15mm flames of war man.The rules as the title above says were Disposable heroes and they really worked well.Unlike smaller scale rules you do get the feel of small unit action,the rules are a you go i go system but only one unit gets to move on your side then one of theirs etc this really made a tactical difference as commander of the Germans we had to hold the 3 bridges the soviets had to take them.In the end we managed a minor victory by taking 1 bridge (steve Braveheart Harris) and keeping the soviets from the other 2 (but this was a close run thing as stuart on the soviet right flank was a real handful all game).Which we thought was a fair result having lost are only tank on turn 3 to a outstanding piece of firing from the T34 command by Adrian or "Ivan killastug" as his now called.I mangaged to even it up with a lucky panzershreck shot on to the soviets SU 85 (i wasn't called Hans Killasu 85 after this but something more unprintable by the soviets players.lol.)
The game was run as always by Glen Brooks who has the ability to understand rules unlike any one i know,not only that but within 3/4 turns makes it so easy that first time players understand as well.
Great game to end the year with,which was in part the rules in part the company.

Cleaning up and Undercoating

Whilst cleaning up and undercoating (I hate these two jobs of the hobby) more napoleonics for my friend Mr insanity Cope,i broke the boredom by painting 16 HYW figures for another friend Steve Harris,all front rank which surprised me as i have always thought them a big and lacking detail but this range seems to be top draw. So much so that i looked again at the frontrank range of napoleonics and i was right big and lacking detail but i recommend the Hundred years war range.Easy to paint with no surprises,16 figures took 5hrs to paint.

Friday night game

Friend at the club set up a a game from Montys meatgrinder British armour V German infantry.The game was a defend/attack game with the Germans (me) defending.British armour (paul and Guy) spent most of the game bogged down in a wood close to their deployment zone and when two shermans managed to get clear of the woods their prize for doing it was to have an 88 flak43 go Bang mit fire.German armour arrived as late reserves and doubled up the road holding the center ground,while the mobile rocket launchers and 122mm German guns silenced the British 25pdr's and priest's until they had to take morale tests and having failed left the battlefield.As ever a great game set up by Paul and he supplied all the troops for both sides.

Just thought I'd take a few shots of the buildings i made for the Eastern front game last weekend.Buildings are Hovels i picked up from Essex miniatures last time i popped into the shop.I based them on ply-board with a thin layer of Blue foam board,the foam gives a better finish to the ground work and paving and bare earth can be cut into it.The grave stones and crosses are just carved from wood and the washing on the washing line is just paper.

Had a great fow game this weekend,got to say i havent had a bad one yet.This one was a variation i came up with.1200pts a side free for all,its the same as normal but with a little twist.It must be an infantry company and you can spend the points as normal but you only get 1 choice in the whole of the Divisional support section.
Soviet V German, once again the neb's were bloody monsters (thanks Steven from WWPD for the tip on these boys) keeping my opponents Zis76's silent all game and slowly killing them with nebelwaffer loving.This allowed my hmgs to get into postion to mow the soviet conscripts down. Great game day and a feeling that the rule reflected WW2 warfare.
Terrain:
Must of it you all have seen before but a few new additions,the Russian buildings are hovels,based on ply-board and thin bluefoam.The resin roads are from Magnetic displays.

Well had the game today,Soviets Vs German,played 3000pts aside with lots of terrain so it was chaos,bogged down tests,very difficult terrain tests.Soviet were given a phyric victory.Best troops of the day? Soviets defiantly infantry,killed a German infantry platoon and two panzerIII's.For the Germans,stug platoon racked up kills on t34's and KV2's.We tried the nebelwaffers for the first time and they did very well killing seven of the nine artillery Zis-3's.
Great game and great day.

And i needed a new river a bit bigger than i had,it all got out of hand as i made it 6ft.The board is two lenghts of fake wood flooring, the river banks are made with bath sealent which is smoothed out with a knife.When dry fine pumice and stones from the garden,slash a bit of paint done.The paved large area is just cardboard and fine pumice,with the odd battlefront figure and battle debris.I'm going to use it as a town square.Started and finished in a day in the shed of dreams.

Just knocked these up while watching the cricket,will go towards a Lord of the rings game a few friends and i will put on soon.

These i made from some scrap resin i had laying around,just glued them to some ply board

All from Forged in Battle.One piece casting with metal gun barrel and Mg.No flash at all.Now the plan was to make these look like they had been in the flied for away and pretty beat up.
Once i washed the resin i sprayed them with FOW German grey.I then sat what seemed like hours putting blobs of maskol onto the tanks,then a spray of Army painter sand yellow.Once dry i scrubbed them with a toothbrush taking all the maskol of leaving patches of the German grey showing through.Where the edge of the sand yellow meets the grey i used model colour 912 giving a flaked paint effect.An overall wash of GW Devlan mud toned down the new look of the sand yellow paint The tracks were painted in Gw Tin Bitz then all tracks given a rub over with a lead pencil.

At last,its done,this has taken so long,the elephant to awhile but was fun,the hard work was the figures,mould lines that would make the perrys blush.So finally bit the bullet saturday night and painted the 14 in one go.

I brought these two kits at Partizan in may from HLBS company (i think) at a cheap price. Now i know its 20mm or 1/72 scale in old money but i wanted a building big enough to get a lot of troops into it.

The kits is a three storey building with a central stair case so the inside and outside was given a black undercoat.

A drybrush of white to pick out the stone work and Foundry spearshaft A and C on the roof tiles.

Next, foundry Bay Brown A/B/C on the brick work.

Then the plaster was painted with Miniatures paint Coffee and given a wash of GW devlan mud.

All done.Well sort of as you may have noticed a soviet emblem has appeared,i picked this up at partizan as well,in an odds and sods resin box a trader had,i love a rummage and a bargain.With the addition of some plastic strips as angle iron i pinned it to the roof.

Summer time and the living is easy

Well,the British summer is upon us once again,which means Two full days of sun were we moan about how hot it is,then the rest of the year it rains.

But summer time means i have to clear out the "shed of dreams" after a winter of freezing wet weather and throwing stuff in from the door so as not to stay to long outside.A price must be paid and last weekend i cleared the "shed of dreams" out and to mark the occasion i took a couple of photo's as this is as clean as it gets in there and its a downward spiral of mess until next summer clean out (a man needs a place to cut polystrene and not get moaned at for a FEW bits on the carpet).Things i would draw your attention to are,DAB radio for cricket commentary and radio 4extra and some times if nothing and i mean NOTHING else is on football,the huge mug of tea,which as i type i think is still in there gentle growing its own 5 o'clock green shadow, also the pack of cigars,brought for me by my sons as a fathers day treat,the building far right is my latest project and I'm doing a stage by stage build and paint but more of that later.Also the "cupboard of terrain shame"which has been reinforced a few times as my addiction for terrain increases.

It seemed along time coming this game but Waterloo in 28mm is a huge project.Funny how wargames mimic history,The french came on in the same old style and the We beat them in the same old style,just like history even down to picton getting killed.
Its not often that wargamers get to play a game on this scale and when you do grab it with two hands.Thanks to Glen,Chris and Percy (the movers and shakers at the club) and Steve T,Andy,Bradly,Doug,Steve H,John,guy and mark.

Thanks for the great comments lads,the practical question 1st,once the french had reached over half way a long armed gamer was used then the french players had to move from the British side,with much good natured nudging and comments re garlic,roastbeefs and bycled onion sellers etc etc etc.

yes Mike,it was i have to say the greatest game day i have had,yes the figures and the terrain was to draw but the company it was played is a key factor.

This figure is for the Steve Dean forum paint swap.What ? i hear you ask,well,it was an idea by Blackfly (forum name ) and works like this,members put there names in a pool and a list is made you are sent an unpainted figure from the person in front of you in the list and you send a figure unpainted to the person in front of you.point being you get a figure painted and you paint a figure mostly something you wouldn't normally paint.

More flames of war shenanigans,this time Soviets Vs Germans,A real close game but the Soviet hordes pushed the German infantry out of the farm and the German tanks and artillery had seen enough and lived to fight another game.
I must be getting better as i remembered the rules all the way through the game without going to the rules book.

Easter weekend

Well its been a while,its taken a bit to get over the Salute weekend as i had a friend from overseas staying for 4 days.Salute was as ever huge and packed with the usual chaos of getting in,it seems "Advance tickets" just don't work anymore.This said when you did get into the show it didn't seem packed at all,plenty of space to walk and browse.Purchases,well poor really for the biggest show in the country,some resin bases from Kerr and king for flames of war,mdf round bases for trees and the jewel in the crown.....Empress miniatures Modern British,only managed to get 3 packs as Keith had be wiped out and one look at these figures even in the "lead" gives you the reason why.Hopefully I'll get time to paint some up for my planned toe dipping into force on force which as i type I'm waiting for postie to deliver.

OK that's enough talk,Easter Sunday wife took youngest over to Kent to see her brother for the day,so i got a whole day painting with DVDs of a war nature on.Here's what i managed to get done.

I had to drop of some figures for Mr Chris insanity Cope as his Waterloo in 28mm projected caries on in an every decreasing circle of madness.Chris lives in Norfolk and i in Essex,this journey allows me to use the 4 worse roads in south east for traffic and road works,that aside it is always a pleasure to go round Chris's as his house is more a wargaming Paradise as you can see from the pictures of his house,figures,books,figures,swords,figures,shields and figures.The night was going to be a evening chat and tea but our other friend Glen Brooks turned up with his beautifully painted War of the roses armies and a copy of the free Impetus rules,we normally play Armati and as i haven't had any problems with the set I'm of the school that says "if it ain't broke "etc etc But i got to say i am very impressed with Impetus as a rule set,it uses the armati style of figures based in groups and no figure removal and a multi dice modifier for unit strenght and weakness.I think these rules could be the way forward for me.Thanks Chris and Glen for a great evening.Anyway try the free set in the link below.

Just for fun this,the main bridge ironwork was giving to me by my youngest son,"i bet you can use this dad?" Good lad,train them early.lol. The bridge ends are just thick polystyrene carved and then sanded.As it stands now its ready for a black undercoat spray.

16 Hetzers

From Forged in Battle range,one piece resin castings,with barrel and mg in lead,with the option of 75 or flame barrels.Two barrels had been damaged in the pack but i replaced with plastic.
The plan is to paint them as a Hungarian assault gun company as in Flames of war source book "Stalin's Europe."

Not sure if to go with the full Hungarian three tone camo yet or a one tone German yellow with alot of battle scar's.

Finally finished the basing on these,has been awhile.The half tracks are Battlefront but the figures are "Forged in Battle" i loved painting them very well sculpted indeed.

The next game we are going to play needs objective makers,its a chance to do something different,this one will be a storage area,fuel barrels boxes etc all from the spares box we all have.the gate and poles are made from kebab sticks and the ground work is just filler mixed with folkart paint.I'll add a picture at ever stage.The plan is to have chain link fence all the way round.

PS.British rifles and half tracks i started have been done and based now,just need some good light to take photo's.

Last Friday i visited my wargame club,cant get to it that often as its a 4hour round trip,Mad i hear you shout,well its worth every hour on the round.its a small group of lads that meet every Friday in New Buckingham,community centre, Norfolk.The level of game they put on is such a high standard most clubs wouldn't attempt it for a Friday evening with only 5 hours gaming time. As you can see buy the pictures above it was ACW using "Rally to the Flag" (sorry for poor pictures i had forgot my camera so all taken on my Mobile phone)which I'm told by Glen Brooks one of the organizers is a bugger to read but worth persevering with and as with any rule set the club will comprise all you need to know onto a double sided A4 sheet,so by turn 2 i understood them.

The beautiful fencing was made by Steve (Tonnie) and was a dream to game with.

The game itself was overwhelming yank force on the attack against a stopping force of Reb's.he reb's had to hold the cross roads at the far end of the table and the road nearest there deployment area,The yanks got a hard pounding from turn one with the reb force using two 12pound battery's sited on the cross roads which in the end put pay to a yank brigade(Steve) when they just had to many casualties to pass the morale check.The second yank brigade commanded by Paul hugged the table edge and once it had sorted out the traffic jam of union troops entering the game it marched bravely on into the woods and the second road objective,the reb force at the cross roads final failed to hold the union forces and the way was clear to head for the second objective as well but it was going to be a close run thing as the reserve brigade of rebs had struggled done the other side of the table through think woods to arrive in the rear of the advancing union troops and time was not on the union side as the last turn was played the union troops commanded by Paul that had hugged the table edge just couldn't reach the second objective manly due to think woods and sniping and flanking from militia units.A draw was called as the reb's had had a bloody day and had manged to hold the second road and have troops in the union rear.As ever at the club a great nites gaming.Thanks to all.

NB.In June the club are planning a Waterloo game in 28mm,25/30ft table and thousands of figures.hopefully I'll remember my camera.

Fow terrain

Whilst in the terrain making mood,thought I'd knuckle down and make the terrain needed for our groups next fow game "recon by combat" from a older issue of wargames illustrated.Not a great deal of terrain needed really,eight pieces of trench 8inches long and eight pieces of barbwire eight inches long.The rest of the terrain we need i have.First port of call was the flames of war website,as they do a box set of trenches and barbwire minefields £50.00,I think not,so i had to make my own.

The trenches started life as a lenght of wood used to frame an interior door.Cut to size,then sanded and the face was "roughed up" so the pva glue and sand would stick and hopefully stay on the surface.Next the wooden support planks on the inside of the trench were made from cutting thin plastic sheets and gluing to the surface.When the sand and planking are dry,paint the whole thing,i use water based decking or fence paint,this soaks into the sand without clogging it and making look like the somme.The planking was given a triad of foundry spear shaft a/b/c .When the whole thing was dry,i drybrushed using folkart sand colour,bit of grass done.

The second lotr terrain piece.This one i used the lotr magazine plastic terrain sprue.The flooring again from the resin spares box,seconds from Ironclan,if you get a chance at a show have a rummage in their seconds box,some real gems in there .Which means the resin box needs topping up now,well its a good excuse to spend money on resin at the next show (salute 2011)

Just a little project for a lord of the rings game a few friends are going to have.Old resin church the rest made from scrap and the bits and bobs box.Used of Vallejo weathering powder on the ground work,seems to work,softens the drybrushing.

These are the transports of the British rifles.As you can see they are painted and have the first weathering stage applied,I have been trying the vallejo pigments out.This time i mixed them with a touch of water like a wash then just...well dabbed it on,the pigments dry out to a matt earth texture.When i next get to the painting table I'll touch up the wheels and tracks before basing.

Christmas flames of war game,Debcrecen from the wargames illustrated article.We sub T34's instead of M4 Sherman's.

The Russians lost both games mainly due to bogging down tests and suffering from the hen and chick rule.All in all not a bad game for our first scenario.

Just a test really to see if i could do it.Tried to make them look like they have been around the battlefield block a few times.Just the usual paints used apart from the mud and dirt around the wheels,these were painted using gw scorched brown and talcum powder.

Have ordered some Vallejo pigments and Will post some pictures when i get my hands on them.
